SAT tax mailbox Mexico what is it and how to use it
⚠️ Did you know?
If SAT sends you a notification through the tax mailbox and you do not open it within 3 business days, you are legally considered notified. You may receive fines, requirements and even audits without realizing it.

What is the SAT tax mailbox (buzón tributario)?

The buzón tributario is the official electronic communication system between SAT (Mexico's Tax Administration Service) and taxpayers. Created by the 2014 tax reform, it is the exclusive channel through which SAT:

  • Sends information requirements (document requests)
  • Notifies audits and reviews (field visits, office reviews)
  • Communicates tax assessments and resolutions
  • Informs about fines and penalties
  • Confirms tax refund status
  • Issues notices about pending tax obligations

In short: if SAT wants to communicate with you officially, it does so through the buzón tributario — not by postal mail, not by generic email, not by phone.

Who must have a tax mailbox?

Taxpayer typeRequired?Since
Legal entities (SA de CV, companies)✅ Mandatory2014
Individuals with business activity / PFAE✅ Mandatory2015
Salaried employees✅ Mandatory2015
RESICO individuals✅ Mandatory2022
Rental income earners✅ Mandatory2015
Foreigners with RFC in Mexico✅ MandatoryUpon RFC registration

Bottom line: if you have an RFC in Mexico, you need an active buzón tributario — whether you are an employee, freelancer, business owner or foreigner with tax activity in Mexico.

How to activate the SAT tax mailbox (step by step)

  1. Go to sat.gob.mx and log in with your RFC + SAT password or e.firma (electronic signature).
  2. Find the "Buzón tributario" section in the main portal menu or under "Trámites y servicios".
  3. Register your contact details: you must enter at least:
    • 1 valid email address (up to 5 can be registered)
    • 1 mobile phone number (for SMS alerts)
  4. Confirm each contact method: SAT will send a verification code to each email and phone. You must confirm within 72 hours.
  5. Enable notifications: once confirmed, the system will alert you automatically when a new message arrives.
💡 Important tip: Register an email you check frequently — ideally a personal one that is not tied to an employer (in case you change jobs). SAT will send alerts there when a new notification arrives in your mailbox.

How the tax mailbox works — key legal rules

SituationLegal consequence
No tax mailbox enabled SAT can notify you via public notice board (estrados). You are still considered notified. Plus: fine of $3,080–$9,250 MXN for not enabling it.
Notification received but not opened within 3 business days You are legally considered notified on the 4th business day. Response deadlines begin from that point.
Unread messages in mailbox Deadlines to respond, appeal or correct run even if you never opened the message.
Outdated email registered You will not receive new notification alerts. SAT's notification is still valid regardless.

Types of messages you may receive

Informational messages (no response required)

  • Confirmation of filed declarations
  • Tax refund authorization notice
  • RFC data update confirmation
  • Upcoming tax obligation reminders

Messages requiring urgent action

  • Information requirement: SAT requests specific documents. Usual deadline: 15 business days.
  • Audit initiation notice: formal audit begins. Strict deadlines from notification date.
  • Observations notice: SAT flags differences in your declarations. You have time to correct or clarify.
  • Tax assessment: SAT charges taxes, fines and surcharges. Deadline to pay or appeal: 30 business days.
  • Refund resolution: approved, denied or with additional requirements.
🚨 Received a requirement or tax assessment?
Do not ignore it. You have legal deadlines to respond. If you fail to act in time, SAT may proceed to coercive collection (bank account or asset seizure). Consult an accountant immediately.

Tax mailbox for foreigners with RFC in Mexico

If you are a foreigner with an RFC in Mexico (as a PFAE, property landlord or company partner), the buzón tributario applies to you exactly as it does to Mexican taxpayers. SAT will send you official notifications through the same system.

A common problem: foreigners register an email they later abandon when leaving the country. Months later, when they need to do paperwork or return to Mexico, they find expired notifications with accumulated fines.

If you have an active RFC in Mexico, periodically verify your contact details in the buzón tributario, even if you are not currently operating in Mexico.
